Devotta is the technology partner for Demokratiløftet

The most widely used social media platforms are built to capture our attention and collect data about us. Demokratiløftet aims to give Norwegian organizations and users greater digital freedom, with a shared toolkit of open digital building blocks for social technologies.

The project was started by representatives from the secretariat of the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA), the Fritt Ord Foundation, the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NIF) and the SimulaMet AI Safety Department, coordinated by the Norwegian Digitalisation Agency. Devotta is the technology partner for the project.

“Shared infrastructure that many people will rely on requires experience with open platforms and digital public goods, and we are glad to be able to contribute that.”

Markus Bekken

Devotta CEO

The building blocks will allow users to move between apps without losing their communities, enable verification of members and roles, and support moderation in accordance with Norwegian law. The initiative will begin with a pilot for young people aged 13–18, creating digital spaces that put community and connection at the centre.

Development lead Kjetil Kjernsmo believes that social media can become something that is truly good for people’s well-being. For that to happen, the infrastructure has to be built with that as its goal, and that is what we are trying to do.

From early 2027, the project will invite Norwegian organizations from the civil, public and private sectors to start using the shared infrastructure.
